Data Center Decommissioning
Data center decommissioning, cleared and accounted for.
Shutting down a server room, cage or data center means every device has to be found, wiped or destroyed, removed and accounted for. ITDW Group handles the audit, de-installation, data sanitization, removal and recovery so you can hand the space back with confidence.
- Asset audit & tracking
- Data sanitization or destruction
- Buyback & recycling
What is data center decommissioning?
Data center decommissioning is the process of safely shutting down and removing IT infrastructure from a facility. It covers identifying every asset, protecting the data on it, physically de-installing and removing equipment, and deciding whether each item is reused, resold, recycled or destroyed.
Organizations decommission when they consolidate sites, move to colocation or cloud, refresh hardware or end a lease. Done well, it protects data, recovers value and leaves a clear record of where every asset went.
In shortDecommissioning means every asset found, every drive protected, every item removed and every outcome documented.
The decommissioning process
- Discovery and auditRecord every device, serial number and location, and reconcile it against your asset register.
- Data protectionSanitize or physically destroy storage media according to your policy before equipment leaves your control.
- De-installationPower down, disconnect, de-rack and remove cabling, racks and accessories as agreed.
- Packing and removalPack and transport equipment for reuse, resale, recycling or storage.
- Recovery and reportingRecover value through hardware buyback where possible, and receive records of each asset’s outcome.

Protecting data during decommissioning
Drives and storage are the highest-risk part of any decommissioning project. Agree the method before work starts:
- Sanitization overwrites or cryptographically erases media so it can be reused or resold. Widely used guidance includes NIST SP 800-88.
- Physical destruction shreds or crushes media that must never be reused.
- Chain of custody tracks each drive by serial number from removal to final outcome.
See Data Destruction and ITAD for more detail.
Recovering value from retired hardware
Retired servers, storage and networking equipment often still have resale value. Through ITDW Group’s IT lifecycle services, eligible equipment can be offered for hardware buyback once data has been dealt with, which can offset part of the project cost. Equipment with no resale value is sent for responsible recycling.

Where ITDW Group delivers data center decommissioning
ITDW Group delivers data center decommissioning in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Israel, and supports projects in other European countries on request. Availability for each site is confirmed during project planning.
Data center decommissioning FAQ
What is data center decommissioning?
Data center decommissioning is the safe shutdown and removal of IT infrastructure from a facility, including asset auditing, data sanitization or destruction, de-installation, removal and recycling or resale.
How is data protected when equipment is decommissioned?
Storage media is either sanitized, for example following NIST SP 800-88 guidance, or physically destroyed, with each drive tracked by serial number. The method is agreed before work begins.
Can retired hardware be resold?
Often, yes. Once data has been dealt with, eligible servers, storage and networking equipment can be offered for hardware buyback through ITDW Group’s IT lifecycle services.
Do you remove racks and cabling as well as servers?
Yes. Decommissioning scope can include cabling, racks, PDUs and accessories, so the space can be handed back as the facility requires.
Where does ITDW Group provide decommissioning?
ITDW Group delivers data center decommissioning in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Israel, and supports other European countries on request.
How do I start a decommissioning project?
Contact ITDW Group with the site, an approximate equipment list, your data-handling requirements and the date the space must be cleared.
