Data Destruction & ITAD

Data destruction and ITAD, with a record for every drive.

When IT equipment is retired, the data on it is still your responsibility. ITDW Group helps you sanitize or destroy storage media, track every asset through to its final outcome, and recover value from hardware that can be reused.

What is ITAD?

IT asset disposition (ITAD) is the process of retiring IT equipment securely and responsibly. It decides what happens to each laptop, server, drive and network device at the end of its use: reuse, resale, recycling or destruction, with the data on it protected at every step.

Data destruction is the part of ITAD that deals with storage media. It makes data unrecoverable either by sanitizing the media so it can be reused, or by physically destroying it.

In shortITAD answers two questions for every retired device: is the data gone, and where did the hardware go?

Data destruction methods

SanitizationPhysical destruction
How it worksOverwrites or cryptographically erases the media.Shreds, crushes or otherwise destroys the media.
Media afterReusable or resalable. Not reusable; recycled as scrap.
Best forEquipment with resale or reuse value.Failed drives, highly sensitive data or policy requirements.
ReferenceNIST SP 800-88 is widely used guidance.Method agreed against your data policy.

The right method depends on your data classification and policy. ITDW Group agrees the method with you before any media leaves your control.

How the ITAD process works

  1. InventoryEach asset is recorded with its serial number, type and condition.
  2. CollectEquipment is collected from offices, server rooms or data centers, or handled on site.
  3. Destroy or sanitizeStorage media is sanitized or physically destroyed using the agreed method.
  4. DispositionHardware is redeployed, offered for buyback or sent for responsible recycling.
  5. ReportYou receive records showing each asset’s data-handling method and final outcome.

Chain of custody and reporting

  • Serial-number tracking from collection to final outcome.
  • Agreed handling for drives removed from servers, storage arrays and laptops.
  • Records of the data-destruction method used for each item.
  • Records of reuse, resale or recycling for each asset.

These records support internal audits and data-protection obligations such as GDPR in the UK and EU.

Buyback and responsible recycling

Retired equipment with resale value can be offered for hardware buyback through ITDW Group’s IT lifecycle services, offsetting some of the cost of a refresh or decommissioning project. Items with no remaining value are sent for responsible recycling.

For larger site closures, combine ITAD with Data Center Decommissioning. For the full picture, read Managing the enterprise IT asset lifecycle.

Where ITDW Group delivers data destruction and ITAD

ITDW Group delivers data destruction and ITAD in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Israel, and supports projects in other European countries on request. Availability for each site is confirmed during project planning.

Data destruction and ITAD FAQ

What does ITAD stand for?

ITAD stands for IT asset disposition: the secure, documented process of retiring IT equipment through reuse, resale, recycling or destruction, with data protected throughout.

What is the difference between data sanitization and data destruction?

Sanitization makes data unrecoverable while leaving the media usable, so it can be reused or resold. Physical destruction makes the media itself unusable. Both make data unrecoverable when done correctly.

Which standard is used for data sanitization?

NIST SP 800-88 is widely used guidance for media sanitization. The method for each project is agreed against your data-handling policy before work starts.

Will I receive records for each device?

Yes. ITDW Group tracks assets by serial number and provides records of the data-handling method and the final outcome of each item.

Can retired equipment be sold back?

Yes. Eligible equipment can be offered for hardware buyback through ITDW Group’s IT lifecycle services once data has been dealt with.

Where does ITDW Group provide ITAD services?

ITDW Group delivers data destruction and ITAD in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Israel, and supports other European countries on request.
