What is rack and stack?

Rack and stack is the physical installation of IT hardware into data center racks. It covers unpacking and checking equipment, mounting servers, storage, switches and PDUs on rails at the positions defined in a rack elevation, connecting power and network cables, labeling everything, and documenting the result so a remote team can power up and configure the systems.

With ITDW Group, rack and stack is delivered by onsite engineers working to your plan. It can be combined with Hardware Procurement, International Shipping and Smart Hands support under one coordinated project.

In shortRack and stack turns boxes on a loading dock into mounted, powered, cabled and labeled racks that your team can configure remotely.

What’s included in an ITDW rack and stack project

Scope is agreed per project. A typical engagement covers these stages:

  • Receiving and inventory. Accept deliveries at the facility, check shipments against the packing list, record serial numbers and flag damaged or missing items before installation starts.
  • Rail and hardware mounting. Install rails, cable arms, blanking panels and accessories, then mount servers, storage arrays, switches and firewalls at the rack units in your elevation.
  • Power and PDU connections. Install and connect PDUs and power cords to your power plan, keeping A and B feeds separate where redundancy is required.
  • Cabling, patching and labeling. Run and patch copper, fiber and DAC cables, dress them with proper cable management and label both ends to your naming convention.
  • Power-on and physical checks. Power equipment on when requested, check status and link lights, and support your engineers while they connect and confirm access.
  • Documentation and cleanup. Provide photos, serial and port records and completion notes, remove packaging from the site and update rack records as agreed.

How a rack and stack project works

Clear inputs make rack and stack fast and predictable. This is how a project runs with ITDW Group:

  1. Share the planSend the site, equipment list, rack elevations, cabling plan, access requirements and target dates.
  2. We coordinateITDW confirms deliveries, facility access, engineer scheduling, tools and any parts or cables still needed.
  3. We build the racksEngineers receive, mount, power, cable and label the equipment to the agreed scope.
  4. You take overYou receive the documentation and completion details, and your team carries on with configuration.

What to prepare before a rack and stack project

The more of this you can share up front, the faster the project can be scoped and quoted. If some of it isn’t ready, ITDW Group can help you plan it.

  • Site address, cage or suite number and facility access approvals.
  • Equipment list with models, quantities and delivery tracking.
  • Rack elevations showing the target rack units for each device.
  • Power plan and cabling matrix, including cable types and lengths.
  • Labeling convention and the documentation you want at handover.

Rack and stack vs Smart Hands

The two services are often confused. Rack and stack is a planned installation; Smart Hands is onsite help on request once systems are running. ITDW Group provides both.

Rack and stack FAQ

What does rack and stack mean in a data center?

Rack and stack means physically installing IT equipment into data center racks: mounting servers, storage, switches and PDUs on rails, connecting power and network cables, labeling them and documenting the installation so the equipment is ready to configure.

What is the difference between rack and stack and Smart Hands?

Rack and stack is a planned installation of new or relocated equipment. Smart Hands is ongoing onsite support, such as hardware replacement, troubleshooting and cable changes, carried out on request after systems are running. ITDW Group provides both.

What information do you need to quote a rack and stack project?

Share the site location, equipment list and quantities, rack elevations, power and cabling requirements, labeling standards, access requirements and target dates. If some of this is not ready yet, ITDW Group can help plan it with you.

Can ITDW Group supply the hardware as well as install it?

Yes. ITDW Group can source new and refurbished servers, storage, networking, power equipment and cables through its global hardware procurement service, ship them to the facility and install them as part of one project.

Do you handle cabling and labeling during rack and stack?

Yes. Copper, fiber and DAC cabling, patching, cable management and labeling to your naming convention can all be included in the rack and stack scope.

In which countries does ITDW Group provide rack and stack?

ITDW Group delivers rack and stack in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Israel, and supports projects in other European countries on request. Facility availability is confirmed during project planning.

How do I request rack and stack services?
